Dr. Amanda Schmidt DVM
Dr. Amanda Schmidt earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. She first became a registered veterinary technician in 2006 where she worked in day practice for four years and emergency for another four years before going to veterinary school, she has now been a small animal veterinarian for seven years. She specializes in soft tissue surgery and preventive medicine. Dr. Schmidt takes pride in communicating clearly with her clients and providing education about healthcare recommendations for your pets. She is passionate about stress-free handling and pain management. Outside of her veterinary work, she enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband and family, hanging out with her pets, and reading. A fun fact about Dr. Schmidt: She is fascinated by dinosaurs. Her beloved pets include four cats and four dogs.
Nicole Andrews-Kees DVM
Dr. Nicole Andrews-Kees was raised on a farm right here in Moreland, GA, where she first developed her love of animals. After high school, she attended Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a specialty certificate in Language Arts. She went on to teach middle school language arts for nearly five years before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian.
Dr. Andrews-Kees attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) and completed her clinical year at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. She graduated from RUSVM with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM) in 2004. Her first post-graduate job was practicing equine medicine on a thoroughbred racing and breeding/training farm in Puerto Rico. After her time in Puerto Rico, Dr. Andrews-Kees returned to her hometown of Newnan, GA, to practice locally at Coweta Animal Hospital until June 2007. It was around this time she decided to pursue her dream of building her own clinic from the ground up in Moreland, GA.
While building Moreland Animal Hospital, Dr. Andrews-Kees worked as a relief vet at other small animal practices, including emergency work in Gainesville and relief work at Cat Care of Fayetteville. In January 2009, Moreland Animal Hospital officially opened its doors. Practicing at a small animal veterinary hospital that she also owns is a culmination of many years of hard work and a lifelong dream of Dr. Andrews-Kees.
Dr. Andrews–Kees is married to Doug Kees, owner of Musicology in downtown Newnan. They live on a farm where she enjoys three–day eventing with her horses Fernhill Money Talks (aka Squid) and Popo the Pony, reading, and exercising with her German Shorthair Pointer, Jobe.

Richard L. Berta DVM
Dr. Berta received his BS in Agriculture from the University of Georgia and married his sweetheart, Susie, in 1971. He received his DVM degree from the Tuskegee Institute School of Veterinary Medicine in 1975. After graduating with his Veterinary degree in 1975, the Bertas moved to Virginia, where Dr. Berta worked for two years at Woodside Equine Clinic, a four-man progressive equine practice in Ashland, Virginia. It was here that he developed his interest in equine reproduction. In 1977 the Bertas returned to Georgia, where Dr. Berta started his own large-animal veterinary practice in Newnan—working out of his house with one ambulatory truck. Dr. Berta was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During this time, his strong work ethic, commitment to superior service, and loyalty to his clientele were born and remained a lifelong trademark. Dr. Berta’s expertise in large animal medicine brought innovations to Coweta County. He was the first to introduce the use of equine ultrasound, a technique used for reproductive examinations and early pregnancy diagnosis, and the first practitioner to utilize the portable X-ray machine in the field. As his large-animal practice grew, the practice could no longer operate out of the house. Dr. Berta’s first clinic, a Butler building on Pine Road, was erected and opened that same year. The practice continued to grow, and in 1990 Dogwood Veterinary Hospital was built, a facility that would also house a full-service, AAHA-certified small-animal hospital. In 1998, Dr. Berta retired from large-animal veterinary medicine, coming inside to work full-time in the small-animal hospital. In 2009, Dr. Berta sold his interest in Dogwood and became an associate veterinarian at Family Friend Animal Hospital while also working part-time at Moreland Animal Hospital. Dr. Berta retired from Family Friend Animal Hospital in 2018 but continues to practice part-time at Moreland Animal Hospital. He welcomes the opportunity to continue working in semi-retirement with Dr. Nicole Andrews-Kees and her staff. The Bertas live in Newnan. In addition to their two grown sons, they have two grandsons, Harper and Sawyer. Professional memberships include American Veterinary Medical Association and Georgia Veterinary Medical Association.
